What Happened on Beale Street is an exciting addition to the Secrets of the South Mysteries from bestselling author Mary Ellis. These standalone, complex crime dramas follow a private investigator’s quest to make the world a better place…solving one case at a time.

A cryptic plea for help from a childhood friend sends cousins Nate and Nicki Price from New Orleans to Memphis, the home of scrumptious barbecue and soulful blues music. When they arrive at Danny Andre’s last known address, they discover signs of a struggle and a lifestyle not in keeping with the former choirboy they fondly remember.

Danny’s sister, Isabelle, reluctantly accepts their help. She and Nate aren’t on the best of terms due to a complicated past, yet they will have to get beyond that if they want to save Danny.

On top of Danny’s alarming disappearance and his troubled relationship with Isabelle, Nate also has to rein in his favorite cousin’s overzealousness as a new and eager PI. Confronted with a possible murder, mystery, and mayhem in the land of the Delta blues, Nate must rely on his faith and investigative experience to keep one or more of them from getting killed.

A Word from the Author

"The second of my Secrets of the South Mysteries, What Happened on Beale Street, took me to Memphis for research where I stayed at the Peabody Hotel. This historic landmark served as inspiration for a subplot involving jewels which disappeared fifty years ago. Memphis has enjoyed a rebirth as music lovers flock to the birthplace of the Delta blues. I hope you enjoy my mystery as Nate and Nicki solve a murder on the banks of the Mississippi River."
Mary Ellis, author of What Happened on Beale Street and Midnight on the Mississippi

Editorial Reviews

"The two mysteries develop side by side, but somehow never overlap—a curious plotting strategy for veteran author Ellis (Midnight on the Mississippi). Each investigation, however, does showcase both the complex, well-developed personalities of the main characters as well as the world of jazz and blues that makes Memphis famous. This newest whodunit proves a worthy addition to the Secrets of the South Mysteries series."
Publishers Weekly

"Ellis has written a delightful mystery that takes the reader into the blues clubs of Beale Street but also lightens the intensity with a decades-old scavenger hunt mystery surrounding the grand lobby of the Carlton Hotel."

"I have to start out by saying, I loved it! I had never read anything from Mary Ellis with the exception of her Amish books, so I was happy to have a chance to read this book. I was not disappointed! The action was fast, the storyline well thought out. I would think, yes that is the murderer, and then be wrong. I love when I am kept guessing, the unpredictability makes a great mystery."
CindyLovenReviews.blogspot.com

"What Happened on Beale Street is loaded with twists and turns and red herrings that will leave you guessing all the while you are flipping pages to find out what happens next. I think Ms. Ellis has given us an excellent mystery and this is a terrific way to continue the series!"

"...The tension and pacing kept my curiosity peaked, turning page after page, until I was done."

You’ll never guess who-dun-it. What Happened on Beale Street includes a body pulled from a river, an ice queen, a P.I. who oversteps her boundaries, a creepy stalker, the seemingly steamy side of playing in blues clubs, an iffy romance, and a decades-old scavenger hunt at a posh hotel. What more could you want? Here’s an enjoyable sequel to Midnight on the Mississippi, and the chance to catch up with Nicki, Hunter, and Nate.

I was so excited to read “What Happened on Beale Street” by Mary Ellis. This is her second in the Secrets of the South Mysteries. I love reading Ms. Ellis’ series because she develops her characters so well, I feel like they are part of my family. This is a great book. I loved all the layers that she wove into this story. We had the main storyline which was great in and of itself. Then we had a little side romance happening, then we had another mystery that we needed to solve - as well as the question of “Are these two related or separate?” and then we had a whole ‘nother angle of fun and intrigue that kept me bringing this book along everywhere I went so I could keep reading.

Terrific book - can’t wait for the next one in the series because Ms. Ellis writes the best storylines, the best characters and the best endings!

"I thought I knew exactly how it would end, but Mary Ellis seems to be able to surprise me to the very last page. The suspense makes this hard, if not impossible, to stop reading once you start. I see more stories coming with this wonderful cast of characters and I am curious where we will travel to next."
