Seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. Matthew 6:33

I’ve found that anytime, at any place, and on any day, my list of priorities are susceptible to falling out of order. I can spend a rich time in God’s presence during a morning quiet time and feel His hand gently putting my list of priorities back in order, only to step out the door and find so many things fighting for that number one position on the list. Job, finances, family, friends, substances, status, hobbies…these are just some of the things that can vie for that top spot on someone’s list of what matters most.

I was raised by parents who taught me that above all else, God should come first, followed by family, friends, and so on. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve learned that my parents were right, but I want to take it even a step further. For our lives to find true fulfillment, God isn’t just the number one priority; He is high above any other items on our list. Everything else is a distant second.

You may think,That sounds harsh! Don’t you love your family? Of course I do. But the Bible makes it clear to us that loving God and seeking His kingdom are our most essential priorities. And when our priorities are in the right order, that’s when we’re able to have the healthiest relationships with the other people and things on our list. The command to seek first the kingdom of God includes a powerful promise: “And all these things will be added to you.”

Throughout this Day One, when you feel your list of priorities slipping out of order, whisper this word—“first”—and remember what really is your first priority. Let all else be added.
