New Self

Scripture Reading: Colossians 3:9-10

Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator.

To “put on the new self    ” as a Christian is to let our faith determine the way we think and act. Regardless of what we say or do, God knows what we think and feel. Paul is saying that good intentions aren’t enough—we must also have the right actions.

Are you surprised that Paul would have to tell the Christians at Colossae not to lie to each other? The Bible doesn’t pull any punches when describing our unregenerate nature, and it doesn’t sugarcoat the truth when talking about our everyday experience. But we can be thankful that the Bible writers were also unrelenting in their optimism—we really can live a new life!
