Panic or Peace?

Posted on Nov 10, 2014   Topic : Weekly Devotionals

Lord, thank You for reigning over life’s storms.

My husband loves to sail. He touts, “The stormier the weather, the better!” I can’t relate to his perspective, but I can relate to the disciples’ terror when a storm sent waves crashing over their boat. If I’d been there, I’d have joined their panic: “Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!” (Matthew 8:24).

I would also have seen the sleeping Jesus—peace personified—wake to challenge the disciples not to fear and then command the storm to cease.

Life’s storms, like the weather-related storms in this biblical account, often strike when least expected, and our natural response is to fear. Maybe our perspective needs a shift.

Perhaps we ought to consider storms as opportunities to experience God in new ways. When fearful circumstances threaten to reign over us, let’s ask Christ to reign over our circumstances. Let’s invite Him to prove His promises and increase our faith.

No doubt He will answer, and we’ll learn to rest in the storms.

Take Action: Panic or peace? Which one best describes your response in life’s storms? What changes can you make so you can rest in the storms?
