The Best Offense

Posted on May 16, 2016   Topic : Weekly Devotionals

The LORD is my strength and my shield;

in him my heart trusts, and I am helped;

my heart exults, and with my song I give thanks to him.

PSALM 28:7

I’m sure you’ve heard the saying “The best defense is a good offense.” Well, the psalmist who wrote this verse in Psalm 28 seemed to have an understanding that God provides us with both offense and defense to face the world each day.

“The LORD is my strength and my shield.” A shield is someone or something that provides protection. When I think of a shield, I get an instant picture of the movie Gladiator and the epic scenes in the Colosseum. In one particular scene, the slaves who were thrown into battle realized the power of their shields as they all huddled together, shields out, causing one of the royal chariots to topple over in defeat.

God is your source of strength to make it through this Day One. He is also your shield—the provider of protection from everything that life will throw at you. In other words, He’s got you covered. On all sides.

When the warriors in the Colosseum joined together and used their shields to protect each other, their confidence grew as they went on the offensive and claimed victory for the day. You may never know in this life all the things that God has shielded you from. But you can rise up and face this Day One with confidence that as long as you put your trust in Him, strength and protection will always surround you.
