You’ve probably heard lots of times that it’s important to read your Bible and spend time with God, but it can be hard to know how to get started. Your parents or older siblings might be able to help you. But of course, your special times with God don’t have to be just like theirs.

One of the main things is to remember to set aside time to spend with God and read the Bible. You can write down times that work the best for you—maybe for 15 minutes while you eat your breakfast before school or for 20 minutes before you go to bed. You can even see if you can join your mom or dad while they read their Bible.

No matter when or where you decide to get into God’s Word and talk to Him, here are some tips to help you get the most out of this time.

  • Grab your Bible, your favorite pen or pencil, and a journal. (If you like to draw, have your favorite set of colored pens or pencils handy.)
  • Choose a time when you can concentrate on what you are going to read and a place where you won’t be distracted. Pray and ask God to help you get to know Him better.
  • Choose a page or two from a devotional book or a part of the Bible to read and read it. Then think about what you read and write down your thoughts, draw pictures, or write out a favorite sentence or Bible verse.
  • Have fun! There are so many ways to enjoy your time with God!

When you sit down to talk to God, it can be hard to get started and know exactly what to say. But remember, talking to God is as easy as talking to your best friend. God wants you to talk to Him about everything—anytime you want. (You don’t have to just talk to Him during your scheduled time!) You can talk to Him about your homework, your favorite foods, a fight you had with a friend, or even the weather! Just open your heart and share what’s inside.

You can thank God for loving you, ask Him for anything you need, and pray for others. There is nothing too big or too small to ask Him for, and nothing is too serious, too sad, or too silly to share with Him. You will never get on His nerves, and He will always hear you.
