You know that feeling you get when you’re hanging out with your best friend and you’re having so much fun? You can have the same feeling when you spend time with God. He wants to be the friend you most want to be around and the friend who makes you laugh and smile. God also wants to be the friend you talk to when you’re sad, lonely, or hurting. He’s the friend who is always there for you.

As you spend more time with Him, you’ll get to know Him so much better. Think about what happens when you hang out with your best friend. When you spend a lot of time with someone, you start acting like that person. You may talk the way she does or do things the way she does. You aren’t even trying to do this—it just happens. And that’s what happens when you spend time with God.

Prayer might seem confusing and intimidating and complicated, but it’s not. Prayer is simply having a conversation with God. It’s talking to Him like you would a friend. You don’t have to use big words or think of fancy things to say. You can talk to God respectfully, kindly, and pretty much like you talk to your friends. But you can also be honest with Him about how you are feeling, including your doubts, worries, and fears. Right now, without even thinking too much about it, write a quick note to God. Pretend you’re sending a text to your best friend.

Some people imagine prayer as something quiet and boring, but that’s a silly idea. You can make your prayer times fun and exciting and imaginative! Remember, God wants to know you and wants you to know Him, and there are many ways you can make room for that to happen. Here are a few easy things for you to focus on when you pray:

Praise. Worship God! You get to pick how. Sing a song to Him. Dance for Him. Draw or paint a picture for Him. You can express how you feel about God in lots of ways, so go ahead and be creative!

Thanks. There is so much to be thankful for today! What can you think of ? Choose one or two things and write them down. You can always go back in your memory to remind yourself what God has done for you.

Others. Pray for other people—your mom, dad, brothers, sisters, friends, teachers, neighbors… If God brings anyone to your mind, talk about them with God and ask Him to meet their needs.

You. What do you need help with? Write it all down and talk to God about the needs in your own life. Remember, He cares!

Confession. What are some sins you need to ask God to forgive you for? Talking to God about the areas where you didn’t follow God’s way will always remind you of how much you need Him. You can always count on God to forgive you.

The more time you spend with God, the more you become like Him. You’ll also find that the more you pray, the easier it gets. In fact, it’s as easy as talking to your best friend!
