When You Must Leave Something Behind to Walk with God

Posted on Jun 30, 2016   Topic : Inspirational/Devotional

Walking with God will take you to amazing places—but it won’t always be where you thought you wanted to go, and the road won’t always be easy.

In one of Abraham’s first conversations with God, God calls him to leave. Genesis 12:1-2 says, “The Lᴏʀᴅ said to Abram, Leave your country, your people and your father’s household and go to the land I will show you. I will make you a great nation and I will bless you; I will make your name great and you will be a blessing.” Verse 4 goes on to say, “So Abram left, as the Lᴏʀᴅ told him.”

Amazingly, Abraham had to walk away from all that was comfortable—his family, his friends, and his wealthy lifestyle—in order to gain the blessings of the Lord. And I bet Abraham’s understanding of becoming a great nation and being blessed was much smaller than God’s amazing vision.

The same is true for our lives as well. Our thoughts about how God wants to use us are much too small. That is why we hesitate to leave our old ways behind. If we could taste the delights that await us in the promised land, we’d leave everything behind without hesitation...and yet God doesn’t work that way. We must choose to leave first. We must see by faith the rewards ahead and then move toward them.

What might God be calling you to leave? Check your answer with these other questions:

- Does it line up with Scripture?

- Would it cause me to become more like Christ in my thoughts and actions?

- Do I have a peace in my heart about this when I pray?

As you answer, I’d suggest you spend some time in prayer asking God to show you His answers, and then remember to look for confirmations from Him throughout your day and record them.

Remember, we don’t need to know exactly where we are going—just whom we are following. Will you step out as Abraham did—with a new name and a new heart, one that desires to walk with God every step of the way, leaving the familiar, the comfortable in search of God’s best for you?
