An Anchor of the Soul

Posted on Nov 08, 2022   Topic : Weekly Devotionals

This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast. (Hebrews 6:19)

The Lord is faithful. His promises are sure. We can never drift off the solid anchor of His care. We are never alone. There is no situation, circumstance, or problem too big for our Lord. That’s the tonic we need to fire our blood and give us courage. The Christmas present to be opened every day of the year is written in the Lord’s own hand: “Lo, I will be with you always.”

The deep conviction of my life is that the Lord is always on time—never early, never late. We can let go of our worried grip on life. If we hang on to yesterday’s troubles, tomorrow’s fears, and today’s anxieties, we will overload and blow the circuits.

But now, because of Christmas, we can identify our deepest needs and surrender them to our Lord. Don’t let Christmas come and go without an experience of release from tension. Our hope is built on our Lord’s faithfulness. He’s there with you now. Trust Him. And then expectantly anticipate that at the right time and in the way that’s most creative to you and all concerned, He will intervene and infuse you with exactly what you need. What an exciting way to live!

Set your anchor in the faithfulness of God.

Dr. Robert Lesslie

Posted on Apr 14, 2021   Topic : Author Spotlight

In Tribute to Harvest House Author Dr. Robert Lesslie

Eugene, Oregon—We at Harvest House Publishers are deeply heartbroken over the tragic news of the shooting deaths of Dr. Robert Lesslie, his dear wife Barbara, their grandchildren Adah and Noah, and another victim on April 7, 2021, in Rock Hill, South Carolina.

Dr. Lesslie was special in many ways. Two characteristics that particularly stood out in our every interaction with him were his genuine love for people and his gracious humility. We have marveled at how fortunate—and blessed—his patients were to have a doctor who exhibited the extraordinary compassion he did. These traits shone brightly all through his decades of medical service, including 25 years as an ER doctor, where his giftedness offered what people needed most as they faced traumatic and life-threatening emergencies.

We get a glimpse of Dr. Lesslie’s heart with these words from his bestseller Angels in the ER, one of 12 published books he wrote as a Harvest House author: “I know without a doubt that life is fragile. I have come to understand that humility may be the greatest virtue. And I am convinced we need to take the time to say the things we deeply feel to the people we deeply care about.”

Angels in the ER, a compilation of miraculous and inspirational accounts of God at work in dire medical circumstances, released in 2008 and has sold nearly 340,000 copies worldwide. Aware of Prayer

Posted on Jul 24, 2017   Topic :

We quickly offer to pray for others. It’s second nature to receive an amazing blessing and confirm that God is good. When our hearts fill with compassion for others, or even for ourselves, we want healing and hope. But it’s not always our habit to follow up these kinds of offers, thoughts, and desires with prayer. And why is that? I’ll speak of the elephant in the room (someone has to point it out)…prayer doesn’t always seem like a real action.

When our prayer lives feel shallow, we’re probably tossing out prayers halfheartedly. When our prayer lives feel one-sided, we probably don’t want to hear God’s part of the conversation. God may be catching a glimpse of our heartfelt needs or our gratitude, but we’re missing out on genuine dialogue. Welcome opportunities to pray for others and for your own life. Be grateful for anything that leads you to God’s feet. Enter a time of prayer with an alert mind and an alert spirit, ready and waiting to receive God’s compassion, love, and healing.

As you light a candle, as you carve out a still, calm moment in the day’s perpetual activity, recognize your need for God in and through everything you face. View your life afresh as a prayer. Are you most in need of prayers formed by longing, invitation, forward motion, or the embodiment of God’s love? If you aren’t sure, ask God to reveal what you need. Then rest in the assurance that insight will be given along with the strength of unconditional love.

Care for your soul with tenderness. It’s the most important thing you can do today.

LIFE Reflections

If prayer feels less than real, figure out what element is missing. Are you truthful when you speak to God? Are you vulnerable? Are you even talking to God, or are you talking at God?

Prayer doesn’t require perfection, but it does require participation. Make the effort to be present.

Alertness doesn’t come easy. Give yourself rest, nutrition, exercise, and silence, and see if you are more awake for your times of prayer (and more in tune with your life).

Intention: I will start treating the action of prayer with more respect. I will become faithful in this way to experience how reverence gives life to everyday sacred moments.

Prayer

I will sit with you today, God, because I know you see me, hear me, and know me. I’ll sit with you, because there is peace in your presence. I’ll sit with you even when the right words don’t come to me, because I know you know my heart inside and out. I’ll sit with you, because it’s time I recognize prayer as one of the most meaningful gifts you created.

Day 144

Posted on Jul 17, 2017   Topic : Weekly Devotionals

Peter and the other apostles replied: “We must obey God rather than human beings!” Acts 5:29

Though the Roman government granted the Sanhedrin their authority, when the religious leaders told the apostles not to preach the gospel, they did so anyway. When told, “We gave you strict orders not to teach in this name,” the apostles insisted they must obey God, not human authorities.

Sometimes it seems that the American church’s highest value is what Francis Schaeffer called “personal peace and affluence.” We want to be accepted by everyone. We don’t want to be controversial. Above all, we don’t want to suffer.

It’s time for Christ-followers to stand up and say, “We must speak and live truth, regardless of the consequences.” No matter what direction our earthly country may be going, it is our never-ending heavenly country we should faithfully represent.

“In America today, it is considered worse to judge evil than to do evil.” - Os Guinness

Flying Standby

Posted on Jun 26, 2017   Topic : Weekly Devotionals

Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? How can you say to your brother, “Let me take the speck out of your eye,” when all the time there is a plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye (Matthew 7:3-5 NIV).

If you want to see what you look like, you look in a mirror. If you want to see what someone else looks like, you look out a window. Jesus is saying we need to spend more time looking in the mirror and less time looking out the window. The next time you see a splinter in someone else’s life, look for the log that is in your own. Remember, the splinter is just a piece of the log. What you see in others is just a reflection of what you see in you.

 - 52 Weeks with Jesus

Have you ever caught yourself mentally criticizing someone else and immediately you remembered that very fault you’re seeing in someone else is similar to a failing in your own life? Or perhaps you’re ready to judge someone when you suddenly realize they’re dealing with a sin you once had to overcome. Just as you’re ready to mentally pounce on them, you stop and pray: “Oh, Lord! That was me not so very long ago. How could I have forgotten what it’s like so easily?”

God saves us all for a reason. Part of his plan is for those of us who have found freedom from a particular sin to walk alongside and befriend those still struggling. That’s 180 degrees from our natural inclination to cluck our tongues in judgment.

It may also be out of our comfort zone to come alongside someone who is wrestling with fierce temptations. But when we allow compassion to move us to action, we imitate Christ’s actions on our behalf.

So whenever you find yourself looking out the window in judgment of others, turn back to the mirror and see who you are. You’ll find the mirror has a memory. It can remind you of who you once were. That revelation will surely end all judging and fill you with compassion for the ones on the other side of the window.

His Devotion to You

Posted on Jun 19, 2017   Topic : Weekly Devotionals

Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. James 4:8

How easily we are distracted from God! When we pray, our minds wander far from spiritual matters. When we attempt to read His Word regularly, we allow ourselves to be pulled away by “urgent” tasks that “must” get done. Though we know our true treasures are in heaven, we often times become more preoccupied with the riches of earth. And when temptation beckons us, instead of fleeing toward God, we linger, not really wanting to say no to the bait dangling before us.

The verses preceding James 4:8 mention those who seek friendship with the world and the fulfillment of their own pleasures. But God jealously yearns for the devotion of those who are His own...and James 4:8 stands as a promise that when we come back to Him with a genuine desire to seek and submit to Him alone, He will welcome us with open arms.

Have you been a wandering sheep lately? Do you need to come back to a closer walk with the Good Shepherd? Draw near to Him, and He will draw near to you.

Day 27

Posted on Jun 12, 2017   Topic : Weekly Devotionals

But in keeping with his promise we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, where righteousness dwells. 2 Peter 3:13

The old gospel song, “This world is not my home, I’m just a-passing through,” conveys a half-truth. Yes, God’s people may pass from the earth to the present Heaven through death, but eventually we’ll be back to live forever on the restored Earth.

We are pilgrims in this life, not because our home will never be on Earth, but because our ultimate home isn’t on the present Earth (which is under the Curse). But just as the Earth was once our intended home (before sin entered), it will one day again be our home (after sin is removed and the Curse is reversed).

“Life is a journey toward heaven. Why should we labor for anything else, but that which is our proper end and true happiness?” - Jonathan Edwards

Day 85

Posted on May 30, 2017   Topic : Weekly Devotionals

"There will be false teachers among you."  2 Peter 2:1

Paul warned the elders of the church in Ephesus, “I know that after my departure fierce wolves will come in among you... and from among your own selves will arise men speaking twisted things, to draw away the disciples after them” (Acts 20:29-30).

These “twisted things” often were not outright denials of the Bible. Rather, they were Scripture reinterpreted to fit the widely accepted beliefs of the culture.

More theological battles have been lost to enemies inside the church than to those outside. The evil one has targeted us for deception. Nothing less than the welfare of God’s people is at stake.

“As Christ is the end of the Law and the Gospel and has within himself all the treasures of wisdom and understanding, so also is he the mark at which all heretics aim and direct their arrows.” - John Calvin

Wait for God’s Answer

Posted on May 22, 2017   Topic : Weekly Devotionals

LORD, I wait for you;

you will answer, Lord my God.

PSALM 38:15

God’s answer isn’t always immediate. Our heavenly Father may not be forthcoming in His answer to prayer. We wait in our pain, and there seems to be no relief. We wait in confusion, and our circumstances grow more complicated. We wait for wisdom to harness our child’s energy for God, and we find ourselves wanting. We wait in wonder over what we need to do at work. Answers from the Almighty may be absent for now, but the faithful wait.

We commit ourselves to Christ because we know He judges righteously. He can be trusted. He’s not withholding His answer for His pleasure. In fact He may have already answered, and we’ve avoided hearing Him. Our activity can be an enemy to hearing God. We may need to slow down and stop trying to fix the faults of others. Seek the Lord and love Him. Seek His face and fear Him. God doesn’t speak freely to those He can’t trust, but to the trustworthy He gives insight.

~~~
Teach slaves…to show that they can be fully trusted, so that in every way they will make the teaching about God our Savior attractive” (Titus 2:10).
Our patience allows God to possess our soul. Hope in the Almighty’s intervention and the power of prayer are what bring peace to a soul plagued by pain. In our adversity, the voice of the Almighty is near and clear. We just need to listen, really listen. Anger’s roar may be filling the ears of our heart. Worry may mute our soul’s capacity to listen to the Spirit. When we trust Jesus, we’re in a position to hear Jesus.
Don’t settle for anything less than the Almighty’s answer. Look for the Lord’s leading in His Word and among godly counsel. You’ll find the richest solace in waiting for His wisdom. Why settle for the scraps of a quick solution when you can have the gold of God’s solid strategy? Take your team or family through a process of discovering God’s game plan. It takes time to trust, but the results bear the fruit of God’s best. Rest in His refuge. He works while we wait!
~~~

“The LORD is a God of justice.

Blessed are all who wait for him!” (Isaiah 30:18).

What does it look like to wait on the Lord? What blessings come to those who wait on God?

Surround Yourself With Supportive People Who Tell You The Truth

Posted on May 15, 2017   Topic : Weekly Devotionals

Surround yourself with supportive people who tell you the truth.

When we have been wounded, we naturally seek out people who can help apply the salve of support and sympathy. So far, so good. But that salve of sympathy can too easily turn into further inflammation of the wound. The medicine of a listening ear, meant to speed healing, can turn into rehashing of painful events and bashing of our offenders. Such so-called “medicine” only keeps the wound fresh.

If you catch yourself reaching for the phone to call someone who would keep open the wound of unforgiveness, stop! Instead, dial a friend who may wound you for the moment by not telling you what you want to hear, but who will also encourage you to forgive so your heart can be healed. The book of Proverbs speaks of this kind of friend: “Faithful are the wounds of a friend.” 12

What we need are friends who help us rethink our thoughts — friends who challenge us to not stay in the rut of unforgiveness, friends who will counsel us to forgive even when we don’t feel like it.

Turn thought into action.

The apostle James posed this question: “What good is it…if a man claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save him?”13  We can also ask, What good is forgiveness if it produces no evidence? You can easily say you have forgiven someone, but the proof comes in what you are willing to do about it. Once you “retrain your brain” by choosing to forgive—even when you don’t feel like it—you can “seal” your choice by giving the offender a gift. Counselor Robert Enright explains:

This point in the forgiveness process may surprise some. Why should we give the offender a gift? We are, after all, the injured party. The offender owes us, we don’t owe any- thing. But by giving a gift to the one who has hurt us, we break the power that person has over us.14

You might be thinking, What? You want me to give a gift to the guilty? To forgive a debt is one matter, to give a gift is another! Yet this is precisely what Jesus says to us: “If someone wants to sue you and take your [shirt], let him have your [coat] as well. If someone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles.”15

The purpose of giving both your shirt and your coat—the purpose of going a second mile beyond the first—is not to reward the guilty. Not at all. It is so that you will adopt the heart and mind of Jesus. The purpose for all of us is to allow a forgiving God to turn us into a forgiving people.

Birds of a Feather

Posted on May 08, 2017   Topic : Weekly Devotionals

Two people are better off than one, for they can help each other succeed. If one person falls, the other can reach out and help. Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 NLT

When the change of season brought sunnier weather, my friend enjoyed the opportunity to sit outside and be entertained by the sweet birds that emerged simultaneously with the colorful new blossoms that bordered her yard. The feathered, lively tourists congregated daily around her pond and drank, ate, and bathed with contentment. After several days she noticed these birds had a built-in system for support and protection. One bird always stood “guard” while its peers took care of life’s necessities.

We face many changes of season in our lives. Whether the change is brought on by ageing, loss, transition, or opportunity, we rely on our flocks to help us along. Maybe someone drives you to the doctor’s office, a neighbor watches your kids on short notice, or a friend delivers dinner when life is just plain overwhelming. The family we are born into as well as the one we create present a way for us to experience God’s support and protection.

I’m grateful for the times a friend has offered to help me before I even had a chance to ask. When people are perceptive enough to discern what we need and when we need it, they become vessels for God’s provision. These moments, in turn, inspire us to be aware of what needs we might be able to ease in our near and dear circles.

We all long for and deserve friends who stand with us or for us and who have our backs while we take care of life’s necessities. And our lives are richer each time we can be that friend for one of our own when they face their challenge of change—big or small.

LIFE Reflections

What season are you facing? What seasons are your friends and family members facing? Spend time thinking about these seasons. What do you discover about the needs that come with these times? Let this awareness be your invitation to pray about those needs and the ways you can become a source of help to others.

Do you entrust your times of hardship or change to your flock? What situation do you need help with right now?

Are you reluctant to accept help that comes even from friends, let alone strangers? Consider how they are moving forward in obedience or faithfulness when they offer assistance and concern. Ask yourself if that is something you really want to be blocking or negating. It is humbling to receive certain kindnesses. Let your pride fall so someone else can rise up in compassion.

Intention: I’ll accept help today. And I will humbly accept the prayers and support of those God brings into my life.

Prayer

Give me the strength I need to make it through this transition. I have hope for tomorrow even as I struggle with today. You have blessed me with friends and family who seek the best for me. I pray for the willingness to share my burdens with this support network, and that I will come to you with my every need.

A Time is Coming

A holy life is not an ascetic, or gloomy, or solitary life, but a life regulated by divine truth and faithful in Christian duty. - Tyron Edwards

My God!” exclaimed the boutique owner, a tall blond woman with a German accent. “It would look absolutely great on you!” She held up the jacket on its hanger, twirling it so I could see the back.

“Oh, do you know Him too?” I asked, matching her energy with a big smile.

“Who?” she asked, wrinkling her forehead.

“God. You mentioned Him. The way you said His name, I thought you might know Him.”

“Me? Nah!” she scoffed. “I did that whole God thing many years ago. I don’t need Him. I have myself.”

That did it. As she rang up the sale, I squeezed in as much testimony as I could. “Do you follow Jesus?” she asked. “He was handsome and quite the revolutionary.” She laughed.

“I don’t know about His looks,” I replied, “but I know He revolutionized my life.” The woman—I learned her name was Anushka—eyed my wheelchair.

I breathed a sigh of relief. Once again, my chair was underneath to help back up my words. By the time I wheeled out the door with my purchase, Anushka still wasn’t convinced. But she did promise to read the Joni book if I got her a copy in German.

As I drove away, I remembered an odd little verse I had read earlier in the day. Jesus said, “Do not be amazed at this, for a time is coming when all who are in their graves will hear his voice and come out—those who have done good will rise to live, and those who have done evil will rise to be condemned” (John 5:28-29).

You’re like me. You meet people like Anushka in your community every day. Trouble is, we never look—I mean, look deeply—at a run-of-the-mill shopkeeper and picture that person rising out of a grave, either to live or to be condemned.

Maybe it’s because we can’t imagine Jesus as judge, as anything other than tender and compassionate. Perhaps we can’t fathom a voice so loud, so thunderous that it will wake the dead. We can’t envision people actually rising from their graves. More horrifying, we are stymied at the thought of our neighbors, coworkers, or relatives rising only to be condemned. Lord, do You mean my third grade teacher? The women who run the daycare center where I take my child? My mailman? My housekeeper?

Let Jesus answer: “He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father, who sent him…By myself I can do nothing; I judge only as I hear, and my judgment is just, for I seek not to please myself but him who sent me” (John 5:23, 30).

If people don’t know Jesus, they don’t know the Father.

I’m praying Anushka will. When my friend took the book to her last evening, she sniffed, tossed it aside, and said, “Maybe, if I have time, I’ll read it.” Then my friend told her to open it up. She saw her name and smiled. He explained, “Joni wrote it with her mouth.”Her eyes widened. “This,” she said, smoothing the cover, “I will read.”

One day Jesus will come to judge the living and the dead. The dead, we can’t do anything about. The living, we can.

Truth - Day 56

Posted on Apr 17, 2017   Topic :

Dear friends, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal that has come on you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you. But rejoice inasmuch as you participate in the sufferings of Christ, so that you may be overjoyed when his glory is revealed.

1 Peter 4:12-13

God tells us we shouldn’t be surprised when we suffer. It’s as if he’s asking, “Whatever gave you the idea that you weren’t supposed to suffer?”

I’ve often heard that it’s not God’s will for his children to suffer. Yet God speaks about “those who suffer according to God’s will” (1 Peter 4:19).

God’s truth is that he will deliver believers from eternal suffering. And he will deliver us through present suffering, though not always from it. Remember that whatever adversity we face, Christ has been there first and promises he will be us then (Matthew 28:20).

“Christ leads me through no darker rooms than he went through before.”

First

Posted on Mar 27, 2017   Topic : Weekly Devotionals

Seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. Matthew 6:33

I’ve found that anytime, at any place, and on any day, my list of priorities are susceptible to falling out of order. I can spend a rich time in God’s presence during a morning quiet time and feel His hand gently putting my list of priorities back in order, only to step out the door and find so many things fighting for that number one position on the list. Job, finances, family, friends, substances, status, hobbies…these are just some of the things that can vie for that top spot on someone’s list of what matters most.

I was raised by parents who taught me that above all else, God should come first, followed by family, friends, and so on. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve learned that my parents were right, but I want to take it even a step further. For our lives to find true fulfillment, God isn’t just the number one priority; He is high above any other items on our list. Everything else is a distant second.

You may think,That sounds harsh! Don’t you love your family? Of course I do. But the Bible makes it clear to us that loving God and seeking His kingdom are our most essential priorities. And when our priorities are in the right order, that’s when we’re able to have the healthiest relationships with the other people and things on our list. The command to seek first the kingdom of God includes a powerful promise: “And all these things will be added to you.”

Throughout this Day One, when you feel your list of priorities slipping out of order, whisper this word—“first”—and remember what really is your first priority. Let all else be added.

Giving Thanks Through the Tears

Posted on Mar 20, 2017   Topic :

When my (Cyndie’s) fifth-grade daughter, Zoe, began withering away before my eyes—losing 12 pounds, sleeping through the day, and enduring great pain in her “hip” (which later was found to be in her colon)—I read Psalm 42 and 43 over and over again. I remember growing up with a song based on Psalm 42:1: “As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, my God.” But I didn’t know the agony that was attached to those words. As I waited day after day, week after week, and then month after month for my once-energetic child to be restored, healthy, and whole again, Psalm 42 resonated with me. If you read that chapter devoid of any personal heartache, it sounds a bit, well, disturbing. Back and forth the psalmist’s emotions go, from pain to remembering who God is and what He can do, then back to pain. Yet that’s exactly how I felt. I trusted God. I knew God had a bigger plan. But my heart ached.

I missed my once-active daughter, who had blossomed into such a responsible fifth grader. She used to help the kindergartners with reading, volunteer in the library, and was one of two girls in the whole school who had the honor of folding up the American flag after school each day. Now, Zoe, who always wanted to be out doing something active, couldn’t even handle being in the car because it nauseated her. She became a homebody seemingly overnight, and the medical answers came painfully slow. She looked so frail and gaunt and sickly, that when she went for her colonoscopy and endoscopy (which finally diagnosed the colitis) the receptionist assumed she was there to receive blood. And have you ever watched your child be wheeled away on a gurney? Ugh. Heartrending! And the waiting is agonizing. I understood Psalm 42, jostling from despair to hope and back again. See if you can relate.

Psalm 42

As the deer pants for streams of water,
so my soul pants for you, my God.

My soul thirsts for God, for the living God.
When can I go and meet with God?

My tears have been my food
 day and night,
while people say to me all day long,

 “Where is your God?”

These things I remember
as I pour out my soul:
how I used to go to the house of God
under the protection of the Mighty One
with shouts of joy and praise
 among the festive throng.

Why, my soul, are you downcast?

 Why so disturbed within me?

Put your hope in God,
or I will yet praise him,
 my Savior and my God.

My soul is downcast within me;
 therefore I will remember you
from the land of the Jordan,
the heights of Hermon—from Mount Mizar.

Deep calls to deep
 in the roar of your waterfalls;
all your waves and breakers
 have swept over me.

By day the Lord directs his love,
at night his song is with me—a prayer to the God of my life.

I say to God my Rock, “Why have you forgotten me?

Why must I go about mourning, oppressed by the enemy?”

My bones suffer mortal agony
 as my foes taunt me,
saying to me all day long,
 “Where is your God?”

Why, my soul, are you downcast?
 Why so disturbed within me?
Put your hope in God,
or I will yet praise him,
 My Savior and my God.

That last verse sums up how to have a thankful heart in the midst of pain and despair. Is your soul restless? Spend time meditating on that passage. “Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God.” When you place your hope in God, you turn your eyes to the Lord. Praise and thanksgiving flow more naturally from a heart that’s set on the Lord.

Today Is For Living

Posted on Mar 13, 2017   Topic : Weekly Devotionals

Trust the past to God’s mercy, the present to God’s love, and the future to God’s providence. - Augustine

If I were to ask you to describe your past failings and regrets, would your response be so vivid, detailed, and clear that the truth would be known, that these failings and regrets are not at all in your past but are very much in your present? Do you keep such things alive by giving them time and meditation, both of which are gifts you could be giving to God instead?

It’s time to discard past mistakes and let yesterday do the job it was made for. Yesterday is our wise teacher when we glean its many lessons. Yesterday is our testimony when we can share about our transformation through faith and God’s love. Yesterday is our reminder that God can lead us through loss and error and pride and pain. But yesterday should never be our substitution for today.

If your regrets are alive and kicking, it’s because you’re fueling them with current thoughts and nurturing them with the oxygen and space of your present. Do you need help carrying those regrets to the foot of the cross? Are you ready to leave them for dead? Because the power of the resurrection doesn’t exist so you can resurrect your mistakes and tend to them; it exists so you can live abundantly in the present and have hope for a future. God’s mercy has covered those difficulties and mistakes so you can be alive in the moment. So you can be used for greater purposes than being a life-support machine for your past. You decide each and every morning what you are going to give your presence and passions over to today—the unchangeable past or the abundant and transforming present.

LIFE Reflections

Which regrets do you nurture and keep alive? Are you prepared to give them up for something better?

Old wounds can reopen time after time. They can start to feel like an acceptable normal when they are instead an unfortunate obstacle to wholeness. Let them truly heal so they are a source of wisdom and not pain.

If you have a friendship or relationship with someone who lingers in yesterday’s turmoil rather than today’s promise, show them God’s mercy. Accompany them with the language of grace.

Intention: Today I will make sure my regrets are not being nourished by my actions and thoughts. I’ll give energy and effort only to today’s hope.

Prayer

I’m so glad to have moved on in my life. I don’t want my past failings to become my focus today. I have so much more to experience in this moment and in the future because of you. Redirect my thoughts and my sense of direction. Lead me away from yesterday. It has done its job.

The Fresh Air of Possibilities

Posted on Feb 27, 2017   Topic : Weekly Devotionals

How little people know who think

that holiness is dull. When one meets

the real thing…it is irresistible.

- C.S. Lewis

I’m a quadriplegic, yet I can drive a van. (It doesn’t have a steering wheel. My hand is secured to a big joy stick so I can steer, accelerate, and brake…but wait, that’s another story.) That I drive should tell you I enjoy being independent. If there’s something I can do, I will. Even if it means doing the drive-through at Burger King by myself.

Remember, my hands don’t work. That’s why last week when I cruised into the drive-through lane to order hamburgers and cokes, I prayed. Not so much for me, but for the fellows at the pick-up window. Lord, give them patience...and give me a smile. Then I moved up to the intercom to give my order.

When I had finished explaining “no cheese” and“extra mustard packets,” I told the voice on the other end of the intercom that I was disabled. “But don’t worry,” I said, leaning toward the big black box, “I’ll explain at the delivery window what to do.” There was a pause. Then “Okay…no problem.”

I pulled up to the delivery window and smiled. Sticking my arm out the window, I asked the cashier fellow to take the ten-dollar bill that was folded in my arm splint. That was a cinch. While he fished for my change, I asked him to place it in the paper bag along with the hamburgers. At that point, the server who was bagging my order looked over his shoulder. Both boys, confused, gave each other a look that said, Do you know what she’s talking about? ‘Cause I don’t! I smiled and slowly repeated my instructions.

Both servers got the message. They even wrapped the change in a napkin before they dropped it into the bag with the food. Then they handed me my order, but I had to ask, “Could you please lean out of your window and wedge the bag right here between me and the van door?” Both boys looked at each other again. “I can’t reach for the bag. Remember? I can’t use my hands.”

“Oh, yeah,” they said, laughing as they proceeded to hang halfway out the pick-up window in order to lodge the package between my wheelchair and the door “Are you set? Are you okay?” they asked with genuine sincerity. “Great job,” I assured them. “God bless you guys!” They slapped the side of my van as I drove off. I glanced in my rearview mirror—they were waving goodbye. Thanks, Lord, for answering prayer. That could have been an awkward situation for those two boys, but it turned out to be fun!

This is the daily stuff of my life. It always involves more than simply picking up hamburgers and cokes, or clothes from the dry cleaners. It involves a chance to make God real to people. A chance for them to serve, to feel good about themselves, to experience a new way of doing things. It’s a chance to break the mold and accomplish a task in a different manner—an opportunity to throw a hand grenade into the ordinary way of living and, in so doing, take people by surprise. (Those fellows at Burger King learned a lot about flexibility and adaptability, as well as customer satisfaction.)

We all have expectations. We want people to conform and comply, fall in line and follow suit. “Don’t rock the boat.” That’s our motto. “Don’t do things differently. Don’t create a scene, and don’t cause a ruckus.” Yet problems are often God’s way of grabbing a lever in order to pry us out of our ruts. And when you rise up out of a rut, you end up enjoying the fresh air of possibilities, the new breeze of challenge and change. Your faith finds feet. Your witness begins to work. You are “brought into the glorious freedom of the children of God” (Romans 8:21).

Today, take a complicated situation and—with time, patience, and a smile—turn it into something positive…for you and for others.

Sharing from our Need

Posted on Feb 21, 2017   Topic : Weekly Devotionals

We can receive tremendous blessings when we show hospitality in the midst of our own personal want or need. The story of the widow of Zarephath illustrates this like no other story does. As we saw in chapter 1, the prophet Elijah asked this widow for food, and she replied that she was down to one last, small meal for herself and her son. She told Elijah that after that meal, she and her son would prepare to die of starvation.

Nevertheless, when Elijah asked her for some of the bread, she agreed to share. Elijah’s request seemed ridiculous given her circumstances, but she said yes anyway. Her circumstances demanded that she save her food for her and her son, but she stepped out in faith and showed hospitality to a stranger. She gave her last bit of food to the prophet. As a result, “she…and her household ate for many days. The bowl of flour was not exhausted nor did the jar of oil become empty, according to the word of the Lord which He spoke through Elijah” (1 Kings 17:15-16).

That would be an important lesson for us to learn if that’s all Scripture said about it, but it’s not. In fact, this widow shows up again in the words of Jesus Christ Himself. After reading from the scroll of Isaiah in the synagogue, Jesus added this:

There were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the sky was shut up for three years and six months, when a great famine came over all the land; and yet Elijah was sent to none of them, but only to Zarephath, in the land of Sidon, to a woman who was a widow (Luke 4:25-26).

Why does He point that out? Because in order to get to the widow of Zarephath, who was a Gentile, Elijah had to pass by the Jewish widows. What made this widow stand out more than the others? This widow was willing to trust God even in the middle of a crisis. She was willing to show hospitality to a stranger—a prophet she had never met. And when she showed hospitality, giving out of her want and not merely her excess, God saw that as an act of faith, reached down into her life, and turned her situation around.

Friend, God honors hospitality in unique ways. He recognizes the sacrifice of selflessness along with the faith of giving, and He rewards them on a number of levels. This issue is so important to God that He will show mercy to you as you show mercy to others (James 2:13). Make a priority of welcoming others and meeting the needs of those around you as a horizontal Jesus, and watch God invade your circumstances vertically with His power and might.

Deliverance from Fear

Posted on Feb 13, 2017   Topic : Weekly Devotionals

I sought the LORD, and he answered me; he delivered me from all my fears. PSALM 34:4

Prayer positions us to receive the peace of God. It’s when we seek Him that we see Him. It’s when we see Him that we’re secure. As we travel across the choppy sea of life circumstances, we can become dizzy if we look down at the turbulent water. But if we keep our eyes fixed ahead on a stable object, we remain secure and feel safe. Jesus is our immovable object of belief. He replaces our furrowed brow of fear with a calm face of faith. The Lord hears our prayers.

No one has ever been sorry for seeking the Lord. It takes time and effort, but it’s your best investment. Process your problems with prayer and you’ll be the most productive. You cannot come to the best solutions in your own strength. The fruit that comes from replacing fear with faith is unlimited. We can rest assured as the Almighty leads us down a new path. He delights in determining a better way for you. Prayer opens the doors of God’s plans and possibilities.

“‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the LORD, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future’” (Jeremiah 29:11).

This next season of your life is the Lord’s reward for your faithfulness all these years. You’ve sought Him unashamedly and obediently. Money was never your motive. Pride hasn’t prodded you. Fame hasn’t been your forte. You’ve sought Him with your unselfish service. You’ve sought Him with your humble obedience. You’ve sought Him by ministering to the needs of others. There’s no safer, more secure place to be than in the process of seeking Him.

God expects to hear from you before you can expect to hear from Him. If you restrain prayer, He may refrain from grace and mercy. The more you think upon the Lord and the less you think of yourself, the better off you become. Seek Him and lose yourself, and you’ll discover the best way. There’s no need to fear the breaking off of a relationship. The Spirit is in the business of mending broken hearts. Seek Him, and He’ll deliver you from your fears. Faith fossilizes fears!

“By faith he left Egypt, not fearing the king’s anger; he persevered because he saw him who is invisible” (Hebrews 11:27).

What fear do I need to trust the Lord to deliver me through? Why is God’s peace perfect?

When You Want To Give Up Before You Start

Posted on Jan 30, 2017   Topic : Weekly Devotionals

I am the Lord, the God of all mankind.

Is anything too hard for me?

Jeremiah 32:27

Have you ever had an idea that set your soul on fire? You were sure God was calling you to do something for Him and you were totally stoked. You immediately wrote down your idea and told your best friend. But then a couple of hours or days passed and the flame of enthusiasm you initially felt began to die, doused by the reality of what it would take: resources you didn’t have, courage you felt you lacked, and expertise you didn’t possess. So because it looked impossible, you gave up before you started.

This common scenario reminds me of when Nehemiah, in the book of Nehemiah, describes how he rebuilt the wall of Jerusalem. His passion for this project was ignited when he asked one of his brothers, Hanani, about the Jewish remnant that had survived the exile. Hanani said, “Those who survived the exile and are back in the province are in great trouble and disgrace. The wall of Jerusalem is broken down, and its gates have been burned with fire” (Nehemiah 1:3).

This meant Jerusalem was defenseless against her enemies. When Nehemiah heard this, he was deeply moved, so he sat down and wept. For “some days” he mourned and fasted and prayed before God. Finally, his passion led him to petition God for favor in approaching the king to ask for help in rebuilding the wall.

Sadly, some of us never get past the passion stage where Nehemiah was during his “some days” of fasting, weeping, and praying for favor from the king. Sure, we may pray for days or weeks when an idea has set our souls on fire. But then we take inventory of what following our desire will require and what we lack, and before we know it we have talked ourselves right out of moving forward. We determine it would be best to stop wanting and dreaming and instead just stick with what’s safe—even if it will kill our hearts. We dry our tears, brush off deep emotions that could lead us to action, and decide we won’t move forward because it’s just too risky. Don’t you think it’s tragic that we give up before we have taken even one step toward what could be God’s plan?

[Jesus said], ‘With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible’” (Matthew 19:26).

Are you not pursuing your God-given dream because you are focused on the obstacles?

Tenacious Truth

Posted on Jan 23, 2017   Topic : Weekly Devotionals

Your statutes, LORD, stand firm;

holiness adorns your house

for endless days.

PSALM 93:5

The statutes of God stand firm forever. No secular storm can blow His truth from its moorings. No tempest of deceptive lies can untether truth from Almighty God. As the rocks remain unmoved from the tumult of the raging seas, so God’s truth resists the shifting current of culture’s opinions. Our faith is founded on the foundation of God’s character. What He says can be trusted and acted upon, because He’s 100 percent trustworthy.

Thank God for the outcome of His truth. His truth sets you free (John 8:32). His truth protects you (Psalm 40:11). His truth guides you (Psalm 25:5). His truth allows you to persevere (Proverbs 12:19). His truth creates value (Proverbs 16:13). His truth facilitates our worship (John 4:24). His truth is to be obeyed (Galatians 5:7). Knowing His truth leads to thanksgiving (1 Timothy 4:3). His truth brings joy (3 John 4).

~ ~ ~

They perish because they refused to love the truth and so be saved” (2 Thessalonians 2:10).

You can be extremely grateful to God for the fruit of His truth. Don’t take truth for granted, but remain grateful instead. Remain a student of truth. This sends a signal of what you value and appreciate. The truth of God is a tremendous asset. Thank God for His truth. Praise the Lord for His precepts. His statutes stand firm. Let the truth of Almighty God transform your mind and heart. Be transformed by the renewing of your mind (Romans 12:2).

Keep your mind tidy with truth. Otherwise your mind becomes cluttered and confused with messy thinking. Invite Christ’s truth to clean up the home of your heart. Then your heart will be furnished with the fixtures of His truth. Holiness will adorn your character and life. Right thinking and pure living are the goals of understanding and applying knowledge and truth.

Allow your pride to deflate and your humility to inflate under the influence of God’s truth. Tenacious truth is your true north. Bend toward truth. Embrace truth. Believe and obey truth.

How is truth tied to the Lord’s holiness? What truth do I need to embrace for God’s Spirit to transform me?

Just Like Us

Posted on Jan 02, 2017   Topic : Weekly Devotionals

Jesus, when he began his ministry, was about thirty years of age, being the son (as was supposed) of Joseph, the son of Heli (Luke 3:23).

Jesus was just like us—born with a past and a history—and we have been made to become like him. God wants you to be a masterpiece of his grace by living for his glory and expressing his goodness to others.

 - 52 Weeks with Jesus

___________________________________________________

Both Matthew’s and Luke’s gospels give us the family tree of Jesus. The former traces Jesus’s earthly lineagethrough Joseph (legally, though not biologically, his father). Luke gives us Jesus’s lineage through Mary.

Like Jesus, each of us has a family tree. We all have a host of ancestors—some of whom were likely scoundrels, others who were godly believers used by God in their day. If we had the chance, which of us would not enjoy a look back through time to witness the odd assortment of men and women whose DNA we share? No matter what surprises we might find there, God has had his hand in the network of branches and offshoots that is our family tree every step of the way. He’s even overseen every disastrous wrong turn our ancestors made and then worked it for his ultimate purposes, including the bringing about of you for this day and this age.

You have a divine purpose rooted in God’s plan. You were born in such a way as to fit uniquely and by design into a great purpose shared by no other human being—past, present, or future.

God’s plans always involve people. Ordinary people through whom he can showcase his grace and mercy. Though God has used some of your ancestors in the past—just as he used Abraham, Isaac, David, and others in Jesus’s past—he is no longer able to work through them. For now, at this time in history, God can use only you.

It is no small thing to be used as a masterpiece of God’s grace. Never forget that.

I have been at Harvest House for a little over two years and serve as the Senior Director of Financial Operations. My job primarily revolves around financial planning, reporting, and analysis. I also get to work with our outstanding team members on the operational side of Harvest House to help support the company.

Working for Harvest House provides a rewarding opportunity to help produce books that point people to Jesus. I really enjoy serving alongside amazing co-workers to pursue this mission.

On a personal note, I am an only child who had a pet goldfish during childhood. My wife, on the other hand, shared a household with five siblings, seven dogs, eight cats, and numerous pet fish. We are currently pursuing a happy middle ground with three kids (pets to come…).

Shirley Jean Hawkins

Shirley Jean Hawkins - Wife of Harvest House Founder

1926 - 2016

Born in Peoria, Illinois, Shirley Jean Curtis grew up in north-central Washington where she could be found picking apples in the Wenatchee Valley. After studying voice at Gonzaga, where she became the lone female soloist among 48 men in the university’s traveling Glee Club, she went on to appear on such programs as The Bing Crosby Show and in such places as the San Francisco Opera House. Her future in the entertainment industry seemed promising, but deep in her heart she was longing to fulfill a greater purpose in her life.

It was in 1949, while singing at an evangelistic meeting, that Shirley’s life and plans completely changed. She surrendered her talents to Christ, which opened the door to sharing her stellar mezzo soprano voice in churches and choirs wherever she had opportunity.

In the early 1950s, Shirley moved to Minneapolis as one of the first five employees of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association. There she met her beloved husband, RH (Bob) Hawkins, going on to support his notable career for more than half a century in the heyday of Christian bookselling and publishing.

Shirley so loved her husband and family. Married to Bob for more than 56 years, she was the consummate servant and source of stability for her husband and children, whom she cared for with fervent prayer and a huge heart. Though she will be missed for her many talents and giving spirit, it is the legacy of her love for Jesus and others that impacted her family and friends the most.

Lord, Help Me to Be a Godly Role Model for My Grandchildren

Posted on Nov 28, 2016   Topic : Weekly Devotionals

We don’t live in a vacuum. Everything we do—or don’t do—can affect our family in some way in the spirit realm. For example, God’s Word says, “Blessed is the man who fears the LORD, who delights greatly in His commandments. His descendants will be mighty on earth” (Psalm 112:1-2). That means that even though each person is responsible before God for their own relationship and walk with Him, there are still countless blessings and benefits for our children and grandchildren because we love, serve, worship, honor, and obey God.

What a magnificent promise from God to His people who reverence Him and live His way. That’s why, no matter how long and how well we have walked with God, it’s always good for us to humbly ask that He show us if there is anything in our heart or in our life that does not please Him. After all, any one of us can have unforgiveness, bitterness, doubt, or unloving thoughts toward someone and not think of it as sin. Those attitudes often creep in without us even realizing it if we don’t ask God to help us stay aware. It’s better to get all sin out in the open before God so we can confess it to Him and be free of any hindrance to our prayers being answered.

Because our descendants receive blessings when we live God’s way, it’s important that we not only always live God’s way, but that we demonstrate it in real ways that are clear to them.

Lord, Bless Me in the Work I Do

Posted on Nov 21, 2016   Topic : Weekly Devotionals

Lord, I thank You for the abilities You have given me. Where I am lacking in skill help me to grow and improve so that I do my work well. Open doors of opportunity to use my skills and close doors that I am not to go through. Give me wisdom and direction about that. I commit my work to You, Lord, knowing You will establish it (Proverbs 16:3). May it always be that I love the work I do and be able to do the work I love. Establish the work of my hands so that what I do will find favor with others and be a blessing for many. May it always be glorifying to You.

~ ~ ~

Let the beauty of the Lord our God be upon us,

and establish the work of our hands for us; yes,

establish the work of our hands.

Psalm 90:17

Lord, Set Me Free from Negative Emotions

Posted on Oct 31, 2016   Topic : Weekly Devotionals

Lord, help me to live in Your joy and peace. Give me strength and understanding to resist anxiety, anger, envy, depression, bitterness, hopelessness, loneliness, fear, and guilt. Rescue me when my spirit is overwhelmed within me; my heart within me is distressed (Psalm 143:4). I refuse to let my life be brought down by negative emotions such as these. When I am tempted to give in to them, show me Your truth. You have said in Your Word that by our patience we can possess our souls (Luke 21:19). Give me patience so I can do that. Help me to keep my heart with all diligence, for I know that out of it spring the issues of life (Proverbs 4:23).

The righteous cry out, and the Lord hears, and delivers them out of all their troubles. The Lord is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves such as have a contrite spirit.

Psalm 34:17-18
